A visit to the Muhammad Ali Center is not just an experience but a journey into the heart of a champion.  The Ali Center’s two-and-a-half levels of exhibits and galleries invite you to learn about Muhammad Ali’s legendary life as well as reflect on your own values, inner strength, character and what makes you the greatest person you can be.

Exploration

A series of interactive pavilions and captivating multimedia presentations tell Ali’s story through six core values of his life: respect, confidence, conviction, dedication, spirituality and giving.  Discover how Ali’s values have guided him throughout his life: the hard work necessary to be the best athlete he could be, the strength and courage to stand up for what he believed, and the inspiration to reach people around the world and dedicate himself to helping others.  Enjoy learning about Ali’s Louisville roots, unprecedented boxing career, his societal and religious convictions and global humanitarianism (chronological timeline is presented in both English and Spanish). 




Interaction

Visitors at computer stations in Walk With Ali exhibitFamily punching the speed bag in Train With Ali exhibitGet in the ring through the hands-on Train with Ali exhibit – a recreation of Ali’s Deer Lake Training Camp.  Try shadow boxing with the Champ, practice your rhythm on the speed bag, feel the power of an Ali punch on the heavy bag, and learn the techniques of the sport from champion boxer (and Ali’s daughter) Laila Ali.

After strengthening the physical self, exercise the mind by identifying your character strengths in the Walk with Ali exhibit.  Using Ali’s life as an example, you will gain encouragement from interactive computer kiosks and other activities to discover your character strengths and explore your senses of self, others, and purpose – integral steps to achieving your own personal greatness.

Our innovative five-screen Orientation Theater film – a great introduction to the visitor experience – takes you on a journey through Ali’s iconic life and inspires you to embark on your own personal path to greatness.  Gain motivation to achieve your potential through the Lighting the Way theater by reliving the pinnacle moment when Ali carried the Olympic torch during the 1996 Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia.  The experience provides powerful symbolism for you to find purpose and strength in your own life, to pass on concepts of respect, hope and understanding, and to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

History

The exhibits and galleries are infused with historical context and influential figures of the era in which Ali lived.  From the tumultuous times of the Vietnam conflict and Civil Rights movement to the people such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Muhammad Ali who earned their place in history.  Travel back in time through compelling media footage, quotes, and photos from the era and discover how confidence, dedication and conviction can help achieve dreams, and how each one of us has the potential to change the world.

Art

Creativity abounds throughout the Ali Center with a variety of mediums and media.  Read some of Ali’s poetry, observe his sketches, and watch video of some classic examples of Ali’s humor.  Admire the global collection of children’s artwork beautifully displayed in the 55-foot-long Hope and Dream wall.  Find striking and thought-provoking pieces of art and photography in our two changing exhibit galleries - the Howard L. Bingham Gallery and LeRoy Neiman Gallery.

From a chronological timeline of Muhammad Ali’s success in the ring and significant boxing memorabilia to captivating multimedia presentations, boxing and sports enthusiasts will enjoy the showcase of Ali’s professional boxing career.  An award-winning media presentation “The Greatest” – projected onto a boxing ring canvas – features photographs of Ali bouts by sports photographer Neil Leifer as well as poignant interviews.

Additional media presentations projected onto three screens and a cylindrical-shaped surface (mimicking a heavy bag) offer even more insight into the three-time heavyweight champion.  Plus, experience the sport for yourself by stepping into the ring in Train with Ali.  Learn all about the “sweet science” from champion boxer (and Ali’s daughter) Laila Ali, experiment with the speed and heavy bags, and try your hand at shadowboxing.  Watch the Champ “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” at our video stations where you can choose to watch any of Ali's 15 most famous fights including pre- and post- fight material and original broadcast commentary.
