Muhammad Ali Center Co-Sponsors Youth Forum for Peace
Louisville, KY (February 12, 2004) – Approximately one hundred fifty middle and high school students from Jefferson County, KY and southern Indiana public and private schools participated in a youth forum for peace at the University of Louisville. Youth representatives from The Muhammad Ali Center Council of Students also attended the forum.
This event is the third in a series of youth forums that have taken place at the University since the one year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The program was entitled “Peace Begins with Me: Understanding and Respecting Our Differences.”
The day-long forum consisted of small group discussions where students shared the image they had of themselves; how they felt others portray them; how these two images differ; and how to appreciate others’ differences and similarities.
After the small group discussion, students converged for a large group idea exchange to share what they had learned.
“ Peace Begins with Me” was co-sponsored by the University’s Muhammad Ali Institute for Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution, the Center for Safe Urban School Communities, and the Muhammad Ali Center. YUM Brands, Inc. and Western High School Culinary Arts Program donated food for participants, staff, and volunteers.
