United Nations Photo Exhibition Opens at the Ali Center as Part of Louisville World Refugee Week
"Utica - The Town That Loves Refugees" and "A New Home, A New Life"
June 17 - August 15, 2008
Two different photo essays on loan from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are on exhibit at the Ali Center. The exhibition is meant to bring awareness and a greater understanding of refugee experiences and how people can get involved in helping refugees in their own communities.
Utica – The Town That Loves Refugees by Vincent Winters, features 28 photos of the small town of Utica, New York which has thrived from its relationship with refugees. Refugees in Utica come from over 30 countries including Bosnia, Myanmar, and Iraq.
A New Home, A New Life by John Rae, features 30 photos by 16 young refugees located in Oakland, California. These refugees came from a diversity of locations including Liberia, Turkey, Somalia and the Congo. Although the students had not been in America long, they were given cameras to go out and capture shots of what they saw.
Exhibit Admission: To view the photo exhibit (only) is free, however, visitors must check-in at the Admissions Desk in the Main Lobby (Level 2) for an admittance pass.
On exhibit during regular Ali Center hours: Monday-Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 noon - 5 p.m.
