Construction on Center's Headquarters Begins
Louisville, KY (September 15, 2004) ... The long-anticipated construction of the 93,000 square feet Muhammad Ali Center began in August.
Conveniently situated between the Ohio River and Main Street in Louisville’s historic downtown, the building is quickly taking shape atop the 450-space Ali Center parking garage (owned and operated by the City of Louisville), which was completed earlier this year.
The building’s steel frame will require about 1,600 tons of material and when erection is complete later this fall, detailing and the pouring of concrete will begin.
The Ali Center and the MAC-4 construction management team are committed to providing a significant share of the construction work to minority-owned firms. Michael Fox, president and chief executive officer of the Center says, “Our organization is an extension of Muhammad’s life work so we embrace the richness of diversity as he does. Having our Center’s headquarters be constructed by a mix of cultures and ethnicities adds weight to our mission and the values we embrace.” A total of 25 bid packages will be awarded.
Later, a two-level 40,000 square foot outdoor plaza and amphitheater will be developed to embellish the building’s surroundings and provide visitors with a vibrant and dynamic new urban space.
As the physical shape of the building evolves, so does its exhibitry, which is in varying stages of design and development at Formations, Inc. (Portland, OR) and Cortina Productions (McLean, VA).
