City of Louisville Begins Work on Public Plaza
Atop the concrete parking garage owned by the Parking Authority of River City surrounding the Muhammad Ali Center, work has begun on the Metro Louisville’s two-level public plaza that will provide a vibrant and dynamic welcoming space for visitors and the community. The plaza will feature an amphitheater and two water features – a meditation area with a water wall and reflecting pool on the upper level and a fountain on the lower level. Landscaping will create a beautiful park-like setting and provide a barrier for the adjacent interstate. The plaza will also connect to a walkway from Main Street – creating a grand entrance to the Ali Center – and a pedway will adjoin it to the neighboring Belvedere.
Upon completion, the plaza will provide street level access by stairs and elevator to the Main Lobby level of the Muhammad Ali Center. The entrance currently being used will then serve its original purpose as an entrance for school and tour groups. The plans also include repaving of the parking garage entrances as well as improvements and repaving of Sixth Street.
Metro Louisville began construction in August and is expected to be completed by fall of 2007.
