On April 6, Lonnie and Muhammad Ali participated in NPR's "This I Believe" essay series broadcast on the popular program, "All Things Considered." In the essay, Lonnie communicated the values and ideals that guided Muhammad during his childhood and throughout his inspiring life. "The Greatest" himself also makes a few comments. This broadcast was the final "This I Believe" essay to air on "All Things Considered," and was heard locally in Louisville on WFPL-FM, as well as around the country. The essays will remain in the NPR archives indefinetly. About This I Believe
This I Believe is an international media project engaging people in writing, sharing, and discussing the core values that guide their daily lives. These short statements of belief, written by people from all walks of life, are archived on the This I Believe web site and featured on public radio in the United States, as well as in regular NPR broadcasts. NPR airs these three-minute essays on All Things Considered, Tell Me More and Weekend Edition Sunday. The project is based on the popular 1950s radio series of the same name hosted by Edward R. Murrow.
In creating This I Believe, Murrow said the program sought "to point to the common meeting grounds of beliefs, which is the essence of brotherhood and the floor of our civilization."
"As in the 1950s, this is a time when belief is dividing the nation and the world," says Host and Curator, Jay Allison about life today. "We are not listening well, not understanding each other—we are simply disagreeing, or worse. Working in broadcast communication, there's a responsibility to change that, to cross borders, to encourage some empathy. That possibility is what inspires me about this series."
In reviving This I Believe, Allison and Executive Producer Dan Gediman say their goal is not to persuade Americans to agree on the same beliefs. Rather, they hope to encourage people to begin the much more difficult task of developing respect for beliefs different than their own
